So Aaron came over the other day and we put together the dragon he is working on. He will of course finish the coloring and we didn't layout the front and backs to match very well but I think it is looking rather good. I like how you can put the wings anywhere on the body. You can also tilt them any way you like (as well as the head) to make a different feel to the model. Take a look:

For capital and budget reasons a 3d miniature line has been sort of out of the question in the past. For this reason we are creating our own line of paper minis for players to purchase. The top-downs are are an introductory product that we will be providing for free download so that players can have something quick and easy to get playing.

I am not dismissing the idea. I took a look at some of the samples on shapeways.com. I would like to see some kind of preview of what you might do. I'm assuming it would just be the designs for the miniatures. It sounds interesting.

If anyone is willing to contribute to the art department they may be compensated. For instance I could use some help with doing top-down views which would be available for free download to Bellicose players or for any game in which they may be useful. Top-downs are very easy to do. I am just too busy working on paper minis to worry about them at the moment. They can be colored or black and white.

If someone produces a whole army worth of top-downs I will send them a either a Bellicose rule book free of charge, or send them some free paper minis. I will have to approve the quality before making a final deal. I don't want someone doing a whole army and then stomping their feet because they were tooooo crappy for us to use, and so I didn't send them a free book. So just do a few to start and then send them to me so I can have a look at them.

If anyone is interested, let me know and details will be discussed.

With our new paper minis that are currently in development you will also know all of the suggested base sizes. I'm glad this topic was brought up since we have only passively dealt with it in the past. I guess it's one of those things that someone designing a game can take for granted as self explanatory, when really it needs to be defined.

I've actually bought a few of the bases from Litko. They are quite nice and the ability to custom order a size is very handy.

We hope to not require anyone to re-base their current armies in order to play Bellicose Fantasy Battles but I get where you're coming from if you are building the army specifically for Bellicose (very cool! Maybe you could post some pics somewhere).

Without further adieu, here is the list of all the units available in Bellicose and their 'suggested' base sizes:

Microsoft Excel Document

OpenOffice Calc Document

Really there's not much difference between a 20mm or a 25mm base. The same can be said for a 40mm or 50mm base. So if you find a model who is not exactly based correctly, don't worry too much. Now you're right if a Clockwork Soldier is on a 20mm base, something should be done about it. But for the most part, it's about the minis we want to play with (and still fit the theme of course). As always, do what's fun and fair!

I understand your preference for not wanting to endorse any miniature lines, but without specifying bases for certain units that are ambiguous, the game is unplayable. I feel specifying base size may not be an endorsement to any one line given that generic bases are usually pretty easy to come by from the abundance of companies that laser cut bases such as Gale Force 9 or Litko Aerosystems (to name a few off the top of my head.) Things like sharps, puffed behemoth, mezzodaemons, clockwork soldiers, etc have been priced point wise for a frontage. Putting a 40mm mortal on a 25mm base is not good. This is especially important given your system of combat where the people that are in combat multiply by two for every round. Its safe to say that If I put a dragon on a 25 or 40mm base when it is supposed to be on a 75x75, He will be doing much more damage, and taking way less damage. Its also pretty important since before you can play the game, you have to make the army. You can not base an army without knowing the base size.

As I said, without this information, the game is unplayable. I look forward to getting that list when you guys do put it out in the near future.

Hey bobtasco, welcome to the forum!

Yeah, we don't really put the base sizes in the rulebook so that people don't think they need to use a specific miniatures line. That being said though, we do use a standard size for most of our paper miniatures. I'll get a specific list for all our units here shortly but as a general rule the standard troops (footmen and the like) use 20mm square, commanders on foot and large-ish models on foot are 25mm square, small monsters use 40mm, and anything bigger than that use 75mm square. Oh, and we can't forget the cavalry. They use a 25mm x 50mm base size.

I recently purchased your book and am really looking forward to trying this out, however, you guys don't have a list of base sizes in the book. You hint towards the size of some of the units by providing paper miniatures in the back, but other than that, there is no explanation.

Is there a way you guys could post the size of all the units in the book. It would be greatly appreciated.

You will really want to pick these up. With both packs you will have everything you need to play the Faerie army in Bellicose. Or if you just like the figures, which you will, then they make good pieces for role playing or any other purpose.

The characters come both on foot and in mounted version. The mounted characters can be placed onto any monster with a spot for a rider. Keep an eye out for the monster pack so that characters can ride a variety of creatures.

So we have been working on the new paper minis for the Faerie Army. We now have it available for sale but are still working on the product pictures (there is a lot to put together!). Here's a quick pic of one of the bird swarms that are included in Faerie Pack I.

Sorry it's not great quality but you get the gist of it. It uses our new swarm base to get three strips on one 75mm square.

nikloveland on "Questions on Spells and Magic"

So reoccurring questions keep coming up about magic. Yes, it can be a bit unclear because it is so erratic compared to other parts of the Action Phase. I have tried to boil down a few general guidelines about the spells so that it might be a little more clear.

Spells that are destructive (meaning they cause harm to the enemy) will usually be harmful to you as well if you're in melee combat with the unit. You should randomize the effects of the spell between you or the target. Usually the risk of hitting your own models is not worth it so you may need to plan well when things should take place in the Action Phase. 'Remain in play' spells do not need to continue being randomized after they have been cast. Randomize the effects only when the spell is first cast.

Now for a related item, spells that help you are only applied to your models (even if they are in melee with an enemy).

Most spells cannot target commanders in a unit (just like shooting). However, lone commanders are fair game (as long as the spell is not a 'large target' spell). Friendly magic users may cast any spell as they wish on a commander in a unit as long as line-of-sight and other rules are followed.

When a spell causes a damage value, Damage Resistance in usually negated as if the spell damage was a single hit (one model's Damage Resistance) before removing Life/models.

The new line of paper miniatures by Sanity Studios has begun! We start it off with two army packs for the Horde. Pack I gets you all the commanders, scarce troops, and uncommon troops. Pack II is all the common troops with a few alternate models. Very cool so you better check it out.

Holy crap Nik! You have made some really nice upgrades to the website. I am very impressed. Nice work! I especially like the instructions slide show that shows you exactly how to put together the bases and so forth. Awesome stuff. The downloads page looks fantastic, and the way you can have just one pdf and be able to choose any texture by selecting the layers is sweet. I could go on.

Everyone needs to scope out the new upgrades and get the most out of this up and coming gaming company. More to come I'm sure. Can't wait to get my hands on those paper minis.

Jim's got a lot of stuff up there on his site, OneMonk.com, so I thought I could categorize some of the free miniatures he has available. Hopefully this keeps people from having to wade through his site to find the cool miniatures.

Haunted Models
Skeleton-Pirates: They have funny clothing but I've still printed them off and used 'em. They make a good variation for a skeleton unit.

Undead-1: Has a lot of good figs (8) for the Haunted including a vampire (on foot), a banshee, and a few liches/skeletons. There is a gargoyle but I think it's a bit smaller than it should be. The zombie is probably the least-cool mini but still very usable.

Skeleton-Soldiers:Another complete set for the Haunted. Seven (7) very skeleton-like figures and three (3) that might pass as liches.

Hoard3: Has one death knight and lich/skeleton.

Hoard7: Another two (2) death knights. The Image wouldn't work

Elf Models
Hoard18:Two (2) usable elf guard (on foot).

Hoard20: Another elf guard on foot.

Faerie Models
Fey Princess: An older model but still cool for a dryad

Others/Multi-Army Sets
Lost Treasures: This has a bunch of different models (10 actually). The Dark Knight is my favorite from the group and works well as a Haunted Death Knight (Haunted Army). Also has two different elf figures and a goblin. Pretty much everything but the hafling works for Bellicose but the others aren't as cool.

Fantasy Races: The only figs I would really recommend for Bellicose from this group is the elves (3) but there are other models in this including a dwarf and possible dryad (Faerie Army).

Monsters: This is helpful for building swarms since there is a rat (Faerie Army) in this set. I also like the wolf for the Summon Wolves spell in the Savage Spell list.

Fantasy Sampler: This set has only a few models I would actually even cut out but I do like the ogre (Orc Army) and death knight (Haunted Army) figures.

Hoard1: This set has one really cool looking orc and two zombies (Haunted Army).

Hoard17: I just had to include this because I really like the steam machine. It might make a cool clockwork soldier (Dwarf Army).

I'm sure you can find others that I didn't include but this is my personal tour of one monk. Feel free to add other one monk models you like to this topic.

Yes, monsters (in the back of the book) count as a separate model as far as stats are concerned. They provide another attack and parry. Monsters are still mounts though. For example, a wizard riding a dragon successfully casts teleport (Arcane CV7). The dragon will go with the wizard to any spot on the board (as specified by the spell).

We normally use top-downs or paper minis as alternatives to plastic/pewter miniatures. I have also used just miniature bases (you know, the pieces of plastic the miniature goes on). And if you don't want to buy anything like that, I have cut out cardboard squares. Laminated top-down views are nice because they give you more visual appeal then just cardboard squares. You could really even make your own top-downs if you can use a graphics program (like gimp or photoshop). A guy we play with just grabs an image from the web, shrinks it down, and then puts it in the unit size he needs. An important thing to remember about using real miniatures together with miniature alternatives is the base size. Standard footmen are 20mm square bases while horses are on 25mm by 50mm base. Some bigger models (like orcs) are on 25mm bases and large monsters are 75mm square bases.

I hope your 200-individually-placed-imp opponent no longer does that. That would make for a long and tedious game. And here is one of my favorite rule dispute mechanisms: another battle of Bellicose!

Thanks! thats exactly what I was looking for. The rule dispute was just kind of a joke question.
question #2 came up for almost the exact example you gave.

What would you suggest using instead of miniatures, as we dont have the time (for paper) or the money (for not paper).

Thanks again!

Let me first just say that these are excellent questions. I would be happy to answer your questions the best that I can. Nik will correct me if I get anything wrong.
1)Damage for spells happens immediately when first cast. With a spell like plague where damage is done every turn, the damage takes effect again at the beginning of the next action phase.
2)Technically there are is no minimum number for any of the units (unless specified). This could lead to some pretty crazy stuff, but it is not in the spirit of good play to field 200 imps all individually placed on the table. We generally like to have at least 5 in a unit, but this is not a rule.
3)All of the monster mounts that characters may have are in the monsters section p139 in the rule book.
4)Neveeer! Just kidding. When I look into my crystal ball I see an expansion book, that contains 3, maybe 4 new armies, extra spells, magic items, rule clarifications such as these, and more optional rules to play by for those who like it complex. When will it be available? It may be a couple years due to our presently small time operation, and limited resources, but it will get here eventually.
5)I'm not sure if I understand your question exactly, but I'll explain how the rules work on rolling for these. When rolling Melee, shooting, parry, or nerve the roll is successful if you roll equal to or under the value. Some rare units have a value of six for some of these statistics. If you roll a 6 on one of these guys then roll the die again, and if you get a 4,5, or 6 on the second roll then you fail. So even if you have a statistic of 6 it is still possible to fail your roll. Now if someone has a statistic of 7, they always succeed no matter what. For instance human berserkers have a nerve of 7, meaning they never fail nerve tests. I hope this answers your question. If not just ask it again with a different spin on it and maybe I'll figure it out.
6)We have top-downs available for free download on our site sanitystdios.com/bellicose under the downloads section. Unfortunately they are not complete. We just have a few at the moment, but more will be available in the future as they are developed. Our primary focus at the moment is the development of paper miniatures specific to Bellicose, which will be cheap and you will definitely want to get your hands on those when they come out. The first couple of armies will be ready in just a few short weeks.
7)In settling a dispute of rule confusion, firstly try to come up with something that makes sense to both or all of the players and go with that. If there is a disagreement about how something should work you can always roll a die and the winner of the dice roll has their way. Or you could paper rock scissors, or my favorite, armwrestle!

And this is a good note to finish on, because it is impossible to explain rules for every situation without having a cumbersome set of rules. The rules of Bellicose are meant to be simple and intuitive, but you are likely to run into situations where there is confusion, or it's simply not covered in the rules at all. In these situations you are always welcome to do as you have just done and shoot us a question here on the forum, or you can use the above guidelines for settling confusion/disputations. I hope that you have found my response to be helpful. If you have further questions please feel free to ask. We want to enjoy playing the game without being rules nazis, or rules lawyers. After all that's the point of it in the first place. To have a good time.

Alright, so we had a few questions come up in some games I've played recently.
1)When does damage from spells such as plague occur?
2)Do groups have to have a minimum amount of units in them?
---I've noticed with the peasants for example it says minimum of 10, but do any other units have restrictions?
3)Are the other mounts like griffin or dragon in the book somewhere, or are the mounts the same as the monsters in the back of the book?
4)When are we going to get centaurs?
5)In the rules commentary it says "Six is the highest value of a statistic that you roll against. The statistics that belong to this category include melee, shooting, parry, and nerve." In the front of the book is says "The player must roll equal to or below their unit's shooting statistic" So which ones are bellow the skill and which are equal to?
6)I talked to you at the gathering of strangers and you said you had overheads of all the units, when will those be released?
7)Who gets the final say in rule confusions?

Thanks for your help!

I read through the rule book up at the Dragon Roost. Normally I just Pick up an book and scan through it, But with bellicose I sat down and read it. The entire thing! It has great rules and art work. Way Less expensive than Warhammer 40k or warhammer fantasy. The only reason i did not get the book from the roost is that I want to support you guys via your website. The more funds that go to you the more Cool stuff you can get and make for bellicose.

As for the "Expansion" for Bellicose I would like to talk to you guys about it. Just to make sure that it is ok for War Gaming because you guys probobly have more experience in balancing armies and stuff than me. This is my first war Game btw.

Yeah, what he said. Basically you can use whatever house rules you like with the people you play with, so long as everyone is in agreement. It just won't be official Sanity Studios stuff, unless like Nik said, you arrange commercial ventures through the owners of Sanity Studios, namely Nik and myself - Aaron.

You are just a bundle of excitement. I take it you got your hands on a rulebook then?

Thanks for that question. I think it brings up some good discussion topics. Now, I'm no copyright lawyer so I may be wrong but I do take interest in these things. Sanity Studios will make every effort to protect its copyrights but fan work certainly helps to promote the hobby and would not (in my opinion) be grounds for litigation. For every copyrighted work (not just Sanity Studios') there is 'fair use' doctrine. Basically it is a few special exceptions to copyright. The four factors of fair use (wow, lots of f's in that last sentence) are:
# the purpose and character of the use;
# the nature of the copyrighted work;
# the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
# the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
(taken from wikipedia)

Basically if you make something for Bellicose as a fan and distribute it non-commercially, you 'should' be ok. We are always excited to see what players are doing.

Like the title says what are the Licensing terms for Bellicose?

Because I have some Ideas I am trying to flesh out for an expansion for Bellicose. I asking this up front because I do not want to break the Licensing in the Book.

Please tell me if this will be OK. :)

I am interested but still trying to dig up some free paper minis as well as get my hands on the core book. Personally I would love to get some Tournaments going at the Dragon Roost. Maybe We could do it at my local LDS Church as it has an HUGE cultural hall. My Bishop Would love this (I think because it gets people together and we have fun.)

I am not 100% positive on the Cultural Hall thing but the Dragon Roost would love to do something like this just to promote their store.
